ShinzoAbe,Japan'shawkishprimeminister,echoedShimomurabysupportingtheministry'sJanuarydecisiontoclearlystateJapan'sterritorialclaimsoverthedisputedislandsintheteachingguidelinesforjuniorandseniorschoolsinJapan.
"Whenthechildrenarearguingoverseas,itisimportantthattheyhavethecapabilityofmakingaclearpresentationofJapan'sbeliefs,"Abesaid.
LiuJiangyong,anexpertonJapanesestudiesandthedeputydeanoftheInstituteofModernInternationalRelationsatTsinghuaUniversity,saidAbeisattemptingtobrainwashtheyoungerJapanesegenerationbymodifyingtextbooks,acontroversialpracticethathasangeredChinaandSouthKoreainpastdecades.
OnJan28,BeijingandSeoulstronglycondemnedTokyo'sdecisiontomakeJapan'sclaimtotheislandspartoftheteachingmanualsforJapanesehighschoolteachers.
ForeignMinistryspokeswomanHuaChunyingsaidBeijinglodgedaseriousobjectionandurgedTokyoto"educatetheyoungergenerationwithacorrectoutlookonhistory".
Thenewteachingmanualscovertextbooksforjuniorhighschoolsocialstudiesandseniorhighschoolgeography,historyandcivicsclasses,Japan'sKyodonewsagencysaid.
SouthKorea'sMinistryofForeignAffairs,meanwhile,issuedastatementprotestingJapan'srenewedclaimtotheislandsandurgedJapantoimmediatelyretracttherevision.
ZhouYongsheng,aprofessoronJapanesestudiesatChinaForeignAffairsUniversity,saidtheyoungergenerationinJapanhaslittleunderstandingofJapan'swartimedeedsbecauseoftheexistinghistoryeducationsystem,andtextbookrevisions—ifshapedbyJapaneseright-wingthinking—willonlymakethingsworse.
"AwiderriftmayemergeamongtheyoungergenerationsinChina,JapanandSouthKoreaifthetextbooksarecompletelyrewritten,"Zhousaid.
