Cassiel Xing, a fashionable 25-year-old girl with a good figure wearing the latest style of Jimmy Choo shoes, stood on the street in Beijing and frowned every time a man passed by.
穿着打扮入时的小新今年25岁，她身材姣好、穿着最新款的Jimmy Choo鞋子，她站在北京街头，每当有男人跟她擦肩而过时都会皱下眉头。
"There are so few handsome men with good taste in China. It’s difficult for a fashion-forward girl like me to find somebody I like," complained Xing, who works in a financial company.
小新在一家金融公司工作，她抱怨道：“中国很少有既长得帅又有品味的男人。像我这样时尚前卫的女孩很难找到我喜欢的人。”
She said most guys are either overweight with a pot belly or too skinny and look like scarecrows, and that most of them are not muscular.
她表示，许多男人要么大腹便便、要么就是瘦竹竿，而他们中大多数人还没有肌肉。
"The standard look for guys is a wrinkled plaid shirt, a pair of jeans that have not been washed for a long time and dirty sneakers. It’s like all of them are the same," she added.
她说道：“这些男人的标准样子就是穿着皱巴巴的格子衬衫、一条很久没洗的牛仔裤、一双脏兮兮的运动鞋。好像他们所有人都是一个模子里刻出来的一样。”
Xing’s complaints are nothing new. The phenomenon of Chinese men’s lack of concern over their appearance has been an area of disdain for their counterparts for years. There was a popular article in 2014 that stated Chinese men are not good enough for Chinese women in terms of appearance, which caused heated discussion and deep consent among their female counterparts.
小新的怨言并不是什么新鲜事儿。男同胞们不修边幅的现象已经被女同胞们取笑多年了。2014年一篇文章《中国男人配不上中国女人》流传颇广，这篇文章引起了激烈的争论、在女人们之间引起极大共鸣。
The phenomenon is mainly caused by lack of aesthetic understanding and education on how one should dress and the different social roles for each sex, according to Shi Xiuxiong, a psychotherapist based in Shanghai who has written many articles and appeared on TV to discuss how men currently dress, and how they could upgrade their appearance.
石秀雄（音）是上海一名心理治疗师，他曾写过许多文章，还上过电视讨论男人目前的衣着，以及他们应该如何改善自己的外观，据他表示，目前这一现象主要是由于审美理解，以及男人应该如何穿着打扮和两性社会角色教育的缺乏。
Although Xing has a lot to complain about, she did agree that the stereotypes in the marriage market and in China’s society are the top causes for men’s lack of concern over their appearance.
虽然小新怨言颇多，但是她也同意在中国婚姻市场上存在的刻板印象，以及身处中国社会是导致男性缺乏对外表关注的两个最大原因。
Most Chinese still believe maintaining an attractive appearance is only done to attract members of the opposite sex, according to Xing.
小新表示，大多数中国人仍然认为保持漂亮的外表只是为了吸引异性。
"I was talking to some male coworkers in my office, a Chinese and an American, about my swimming hobby. My Chinese colleague told me that I should get married soon so that I don’t have to exercise to maintain my figure anymore," Xing said.
小新说道：“我曾和我办公室的男同事谈过这件事，他们一个是中国人一个是美国人。我的中国同事告诉我说，我应该尽快结婚，那样我就不必辛苦锻炼保持身材了。”
"While my American colleague complimented me for having a good habit to keep healthy."
“而我的美国同事则称赞我有一个保持健康的好习惯。”
She said the popular stereotype in the Chinese marriage market is that the girl should be pretty and the guy should have economical means to provide necessary things for life such as a house and a car.
小新表示中国婚姻市场一种刻板印象就是，女人负责漂亮，而男人则负责提供房子和车子等生活必需品的经济手段。
So in order to attract the opposite sex, the most important thing for the guy is to be economically affluent, rather than keeping up with his appearance, according to Xing.
因此小新表示，为了吸引异性，男人最重要的是要有钱，而不是外表光鲜亮丽。
"However, as more women are gaining economical equality, those stereotypes are not going to fly. More women are paying attention to males’ appearances," Xing said.
小新说道：“然而，随着越来越多的女性获得经济上的平等，这些刻板印象将不再存在。越来越多的女性开始在意男人的外表。”
"What a person’s face looks like and how tall they are is based on genetics, but it doesn’t mean that people can’t do something to improve their appearance," Xing said.
“一个人长什么样、有多高要看遗传，但是这并不代表人们不能做些什么来改善自己的外观。”
"If a guy has a clean look, exercises regularly, wears appropriate clothes and has a confident attitude, then it shows that he cares about his appearance," she said.
她说道：“如果一个男人外表干净清爽、经常锻炼、衣着得体、非常自信的话，这就说明他很在意自己的外观。”
