HOUSTON -- Yao Ming, the first man to become the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft without playing in college, was honored Friday night as the Houston Rockets retired his No. 11 jersey.

Yao, 36, played seven Nbaseasons before missing the 2009-10 season with a foot injury. He played just five games in 2010-11 because of an ankle injury.

The 7-foot-6 center was named to the All-Nbasecond team twice and third team three times, and in 2005 he broke Michael Jordan’s record for All-Star votes with 2,558,278.
这个7尺6寸高的中锋曾两次入选NBA最佳二阵，三次入选最佳三阵。2005年，他以2558278票打破了迈克尔·乔丹创下的全明星得票记录。
"I didn’t know what to expect," Yao said of when he was drafted in 2002 out of Shanghai, China. "I just wanted to play basketball, the NBA way, against the best players in the world. I just wanted to be deserved to play on this court."

Yao’s news conference on Friday was attended by NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Rockets owner Leslie Alexander and numerous international media members.

The Rockets will hold an extended halftime ceremony during their game against the Bulls. Former teammates, including Tracy McGrady, Dikembe Mutombo and Shane Battier, are scheduled to be in attendance.

The Rockets have now retired six jersey numbers in franchise history. Yao joins Drexler, Moses Malone, Murphy, Olajuwon and Rudy Tomjanovich. Former Rockets GM Carroll Dawson is honored with a banner of his initials inside the Toyota Center.

"I feel old to see that," Yao said. "The guys up there, Rudy T was my coach, and then to have a statue for Hakeem. I remember my first game for the Rockets was when we retired his jersey. And we watched it in the locker room and I remember saying that was motivation to play hard."

After he was the first overall pick of the 2002 NBA draft, Yao excelled on and off the court. He became nearly an instant sensation, helping the NBA become a global brand in China. When Yao played he propelled the Rockets to become the No. 1 team among fans in China.

Yao was an eight-time All-Star who averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while shooting 52.4 percent from the field. From 2005-06 through 2008-09, Yao averaged 21.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He joined Kevin Garnett, who retired last season, as the only players to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Injuries shortened Yao’s career, particularly to his foot and ankle. "If he stayed healthy, we might have won a couple of championships," Alexander said.

Yao was enshrined into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year, along with Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal.

"As a basketball player he’s one of the best," Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said. "He presented something you don’t really see every day, 7-6 of an unbelievable talent and knowledge of the game.
