The 2016 games will see two new sports join the Olympic family. Rugby sevens and golf now take the number of core team sports to 28. In another four years, however, the games will see the introduction of five new sports, as the I-O-C implements its Agenda 2020 initiative. This will allow host nations to introduce sports popular in its region, in a bid to revamp the games, and attract younger views.
As the clock ticks to the start of this year's Olympic game in Rio de Janeiro the International Olympic Committee is already looking ahead.
The IOC confirmed on Wednesday five sports will feature in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
"We are delighted to confirm baseball/softball, Karate, Skateboarding, Sport climbing and surfing will be on the program for these games will be considered Olympic sports," IOC sports director Kit McConnell said.
Back to the present, the IOC is confident of successful games despite challenges organizers have been facing.
The amount of toxins in the Guanabara bay which will host triathlon, marathon swimming and sailing events continues to raise concern.
"There have been four tests every day for the past 15 days all of which have met the world health organization guidelines and as far as I understand many athletes are looking forward to competing," IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said.
For the IOC the Rio Olympics have been challenging on a number of fronts from security, zika virus, socio-economic issues within the host nation to a doping headache that refuses to go away. But once the games begin they hope the performances will give the world something to remember beyond the problems.
