中国的新一代富豪——大学里的科学家们

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called upon the country’s best and brightest to make more breakthroughs in science and technology, with billions of yuan being pumped into higher education.

中国主席习近平号召中国的优秀人才，在科学技术领域做出更多突破，为此，成百上千万的资金被投入了高等教育。

Now, it seems that an increasing amount of that money is going into scientists’ pockets. According to a new report by South China Morning Post, the ranks of millionaire scientists in China are growing rapidly.

而现在，看起来，科学家们的口袋在越来越鼓。根据南华早报的一份新报告，跻身百万富翁的科学家越来越多。

“Chinese scientists working in the world’s top research institutes are in short supply, but the demand for their return is almost infinite,” Zhang Liyi, an official at the human resources department at the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology, told the newspaper.

宁波理工大学人力资源的工作人员，张丽颐称，工作在世界顶级研究机构的中国科学家一直供不应求，而对他们回归的需求更是不会停止。

China’s program of investment in higher education over the past decades is now paying dividends with some universities reaching world-class status, according to several rankings.

根据多项排名，中国近几十年对高等项目的投入现在在逐渐收回红利，一些大学达到了世界顶级水平。

A survey published in the scientific journal Nature concluded that university scientists in China made on average $40,000 a year in 2010, while their counterparts in the U.S. made double that amount. Now, the gap is vanishing.

一项发表在科学杂志《自然》上面的文章总结，中国大学的科学家在2010年的人均收入是4万美元，而在美国，科学家的收入要多一倍，但是，现在差距越来越少。

“In major cities, more and more Chinese scientists are making as much as they can for the same position in the U.S.,” a senior life scientist at Tsinghua University in Beijing told the SCMP.

清华大学一名高级生命科学家告诉南华早报，在中国各大主要城市，越来越多的中国科学家赚得和美国科学家差不多。

Chinese professors with overseas experience get an average starting salary of about $120,000 a year, it added.

南华早报称，有海外留学经验的中国教授起薪是，每年12万美元。

Additionally, some university researchers can get a 700,000 yuan ($107,000) bonus for each paper published by top academic journals.

此外，在一些高校，如果论文发表在顶级学术期刊中，研究者还可获得10万美元左右的奖金。

There’s also commercial potential in the scientists’ research. A professor at Wuhan Institute of Technology in Hubei reportedly earned 13 million yuan ($2 million) from selling ceramic coating technology to a company last year.

另外，在一些科学家的研究中，还有很多商业价值。据报道，去年，武汉科技大学的一名教授就通过出售陶瓷涂层技术，获得了200万美元。

These top earning scientists have, however, come under fire, with critics questioning whether their heart truly lay in science – or in their paychecks.

不过，这些顶级科学家还是备受争议，很多人质疑他们是在专心做科研，还是在赚钱。
