Coral Sea Islands

There are no active volcanoes in the Coral Sea area, undersea or above sea level. The buoy in question rode above the deep trench just north of the Coral Sea Islands.

Composed of some 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands, it stretches for 1,616 miles and is strung out over 133,000 square miles of the Coral Sea in Queensland, north east Australia.

In 2006, high sea temperatures caused severe coral bleaching in the Keppell Islands, in the southern part of the reef - the largest coral reef system in the world.
